Last night I started reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This Pulitzer Prize winning novel spawned a critically acclaimed movie starring Gregory Peck.
I immediately noticed the large amount of backstory and narration Lee provides in the first chapter in contrast to work I've been reading lately by Carl Hiaasen and by Stephen King. King's book On Writing advises getting to the story quickly to retain the readers interest from the beginning. However, I found this background information interesting and enjoyed the descriptions of "Hoover carts" and of the slow paced lifestyle prevalent in southern communities.
I've spent a lot of time in Tenneessee and have heard people refer to Hoover carts and witnessed the slower pace and laid back approach to everyday living first hand.
I love the South and, so far, I love this book.

I need to read To Kill A Mocking Bird. I even think I have it around here somewhere. I also need to read On Writing. I've been hearing alot about it lately. I've never read a Stephen King book, just know I'm not a fan of the genre but I've heard he's a great writer.
The last book I read that I loved was The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. Have you read it? I loved it, and highly recommend it.
